I have been...

trying to blog since last week, but blogger wouldn't load in my browser... I thought I might try my luck today and I did get in. BUT! I forgot what I wanted to blog about... =(

Oh well...

And since I finally got into to blogger... I'll say a few things...

I remember I once had this discussion with a course mate... that is to remain objective about an issue and not compromising your own perspective. That is to be non-judgemental and respecting that everybody has their opinion and yet at the same time... to be aware of where you stand.

I thought it is little challenging. I see this as a contradiction... How can one be objective and yet take a firm stand.

For example, I don't think of myself as an advocate for anti racism. However, I do feel for people who have been or are discriminated based on their race or by virtue that they are different from the mainstream society, whatever that may be.

When people around me, indulge in racist jokes and making racist remarks. I have to tell myself that they are just having fun among themselves and as long as they don't have serious intention to harm or hurt the other party that they are making the butt of the joke, it's fine...

So I usually keep quiet and if I can afford, I won't 'join in the fun'. Else I may have to fight the urge for a confrontational debate about racial/religious issues.

Then again, aren't we also the butt of other people's jokes sometimes? The Chinese make fun of the malays and Indians, the ang moh make fun of the Asians, etc... It's essentially a vicious cyle.

I guess everyone has their rights to think which ever way and what ever they want. I can't and won't bother to go around telling people it's baaaaaad to make racist remarks. Reality has it that MOST people (social worker do not stereotype), tend to live in their little boxes. Which is good... depending on how you look at it.

It's good that they have such strong beliefs about the world that they live in. They know clearly what they want in life and will not succumb to external influences. On the other hand, people like me... who are too objective might give people the impression that I have no stand. Or I am feeble in sculpting a perspective which I can own...

Nevertheless... I'd like to think that I'm open minded (hopefully my brain won't fall out)...
